Installing GlassFish v3 Technology Preview 2 Application Server

Installation of GlassFishTM v3 Technology Preview 2 Application Server requires JDKTM release 5 or JDK release 6.


Note - On SolarisTM systems, only JDK release 5 is supported. For details, see the description of this issue in the Release Notes.


The following binary files that are used with Application Server must come from the JDK software, not the JavaTM Runtime Environment (JRETM) software:

To meet this requirement, ensure that the bin directory of the JDK software is at the start of your path.


Download Files for GlassFish v3 Technology Preview 2 Application Server

GlassFish v3 Technology Preview 2 Application Server software is available in the following formats from the GlassFish Project - v3 Technology Preview 2 page:


To Install Application Server From the ZIP File

This file can be used on all supported platforms.

  1. Download the gfv3-preview2.zip ZIP file to the directory where you are installing Application Server.
  2. Change to the directory where you downloaded the ZIP file.
  3. Unzip the gfv3-preview2.zip file.
    unzip gfv3-preview2.zip

    This command installs the v3 Technology Preview 2 distribution into a new glassfishv3-tp2 directory under your current directory.

  4. (Optional) Install the Update Tool by running one of the following utilities in the glassfishv3-tp2/bin directory:

    The Update Tool enables the extension of the Application Server's basic functionality through addition of modules.

Windows: To Install Application Server From the Windows Installer File

The Windows Installer file can be used only on Windows systems.

  1. Download the gfv3-tp2-installer.exe Windows Installer file.
  2. Double-click the gfv3-tp2-installer.exe file to start the Windows Installer.

    The Welcome screen of the GlassFish v3 installer appears.

  3. Click Next.
  4. Read and accept the terms of the license agreement.
  5. Specify the installation directory and click Next.

    The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\glassfish-v3tp2.

  6. Specify the Administration port and click Next.
  7. Specify whether to install the Update Tool and set any required options.

    The Update Tool enables the extension of the Application Server's basic functionality through addition of modules.


    Note - If you plan to register the Application Server with SunSM Connection, specify the proxy host and proxy port even if you are not installing the Update Tool.


    1. If you are not installing the Update Tool, deselect the Install Update Tool check box.
    2. If you are installing the Update Tool and your machine accesses the Internet through a proxy, specify the proxy host and proxy port.
    3. If you do not require the Update Tool to be enabled automatically after installation, deselect the Enable Update Tool check box.
  8. Click Next.

    The Ready To Install page summarizes the installation and configuration operations that the installer will perform.

  9. Click Install.

    After installation, the installer prompts you to register the Application Server with Sun Connection.

  10. Determine whether and how to register the Application Server with Sun Connection.

    To register your installation of GlassFish v3 Technology Preview 2 Application Server with Sun Connection, you must have a Sun Online Account. If you do not have a Sun Online Account, the Application Server installer enables you to create an account while registering Application Server.


    Note - If you create a Sun Online Account while registering GlassFish v3 Technology Preview 2 Application Server, you are prompted only for the required information. You can provide additional, optional information by updating your Sun Online Account.


  11. Click Exit.

To Install Application Server From the Self-Extracting Installer File

This file can be used only on UNIX systems and Linux systems.

Before You Begin

Ensure that the JAVA_HOME environment variable is set to the directory where your JDK software is installed.

  1. Download the gfv3-tp2-installer.sh self-extracting installer file.
  2. Change to the directory where you downloaded the gfv3-tp2-installer.sh file.
  3. If necessary, grant execute permissions to the gfv3-tp2-installer.sh file.
    chmod +x gfv3-tp2-installer.sh
  4. Extract the contents of the gfv3-tp2-installer.sh file and start the installer program.
    ./gfv3-tp2-installer.sh

    The Welcome screen of the GlassFish v3 installer appears.

  5. Click Next.
  6. Read and accept the terms of the license agreement.
  7. Specify the installation directory and click Next.

    The default installation directory is user’s-home-directory/glassfish-v3tp2.

    The home directory of the user who is running the GlassFish v3 installer.

  8. Specify the Administration port and click Next.
  9. Specify whether to install the Update Tool and set any required options.

    The Update Tool enables the extension of the Application Server's basic functionality through addition of modules.


    Note - If you plan to register the Application Server with Sun Connection, specify the proxy host and proxy port even if you are not installing the Update Tool.

To Remove Application Server Software

  1. Delete the as-install directory, including all subdirectories.
  2. If you used the gfv3-tp2-installer.exe Windows Installer file, locate and delete the relevant program entries on the Start→All Programs→GlassFish V3 TP2 menu.
